A video by University of Witwatersrand Student Representative Council (SRC) went viral early this morning (4 March) highlighting the lack of student accommodation available at the university. The SRC took to the streets to protest on what they say is the lack of student accommodation provided by the university causing heavy traffic on Empire Road.
In a tweet Wits SRC wrote, “When we resort to other measures we do so because we have exhausted all other forms of engagement. A storm is coming. It cannot be that under our leadership students are subjected to these inhumane conditions. Our students will be accommodated!”

We have inherited a broken system. The University has money to militarize the institution but cannot make beds available for students. @MYANC @WitsUniversity FIX THIS! pic.twitter.com/LqA6DGsdVz

Students @WitsUniversity still have no accommodation in March? What are the chances that these kids will excel academically, what are they even eating? https://t.co/kZQntTGx1F

No matter how you feel about student protests, if you can’t feel for students who are sleeping on library floors each night and then sitting next to you in lecture halls the next day- then you’re as ugly as the system itself. Stand in solidarity with your colleagues! #Wits

Not RTing the video of Wits students sleeping in labs, I don’t feel comfortable sharing their identity on here. I will say this: food security and lack of accommodation still remain to be huge barriers of success for many students. These glaring inequities must be addressed.
