JMPD graduates go back to training after reports of incompetence emerge
JOBURG – Minnaar confirmed some needed to be fully trained to become competent in handling firearms, driving skills as well as controlling traffic.
Johannesburg Metro Police Department’s (JMPD) graduates are reported to have returned to training after reports of incompetence emerged.
The more than 1000 graduates attended training for 18 months at the City of Johannesburg’s training academy.
It was reported that the graduates were unable to direct traffic, handle firearms or drive well on the busy Johannesburg roads.
JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said JMPD sent the graduates back to the academy because they lacked some of the basic requirements. “All our officers are not the same and don’t have similar skills and talents,” he said.

Minnaar added that in-service training was done regularly. “These are young officers who don’t have firearms yet and need training before they are competent.”
He said officers needed to have two years’ experience and then be trained at the academy before they could be issued with a tag to drive JMPD vehicles.
Minnaar told News24, that it was a shock for them to learn that they had to send more than 1 000 officers back to the academy.
