Imagine how well families and learners would fit into their new grades and schools if they were given a chance to sit and relax with their new teachers and other learners.
No need to imagine this for those at Orban School in Westdene as they recently hosted their annual Meet and Greet Picnic.
Principal at Orban, Liz van Tonder expressed the value of having such meet and greets between the school and its learners and their families. She said, “This is truly the one event that outlines Orban’s ethos. We are a family at Orban, and we all care deeply for the parents and pupils that make up this wonderful school and every year we still have Orban allumni students that come back to join in the fun at our picnic.”
Over the past 10 years, the school has been hosting these picnics to welcome back old and new learners. On the day, with the majestic Melville Koppies in the background, parents and learners had an opportunity to interact with Orban teachers. Teachers each wore a sash indicating their personality trademark while a Zumba instructor made sure that the dance ice-breaker had everyone in a good mood.
The evening ended with a few learners and teachers braving some dance steps on the lawns. Orban is clearly setting the trend for fun inclusion of parents, learners and teachers alike with this creative tradition.
