Two elderly men and their domestic workers fall victim to robbers

LINDEN – The Linden police are encouraging increased vigilance in the elderly and domestic worker community after two separate incidents of robbery.

The Linden police are encouraging increased vigilance in the elderly and domestic worker community after two separate incidents of robbery.

According to Linden police spokesperson Constable Takalani Matumba in two separate incidents, a 75-year-old man and an 86 year-old man and their domestic workers fell victim to savage incidents of robberies.

The 75-year-old man and his domestic worker, who lives in his home in Esmeralda Crescent in Robindale, fell victim to a robbery on 31 January.

Four men allegedly subdued the domestic worker outside the house, carrying firearms and knives.

“The four males ordered both the man and his domestic worker to lie down and not make a noise. They tied up their hands and proceeded to ransack the house,” said Matumba.

The suspects allegedly stole cash, jewellery and cell phones.

The suspects made off with the goods in their green Mazda Etude getaway vehicle.

“The Linden police are pleading with the community to be on the lookout for a suspicious green Mazda Etude with the registration DBN 714 GP. Please contact the Linden police, but do not try and approach the driver as the suspects are armed and seem to be dangerous.”

In the other incident, the 86 year-old man and his domestic worker were allegedly attacked in his home in Lords Avenue, Robindale on the same day as the previous victim.

“In the same manner, suspects subdued the domestic worker before moving into the house to tie up their victims,” said Matumba.

The domestic worker was allegedly stabbed in her back and the man was hit on his neck with an unknown object and sustained slight injuries.

The domestic worker is under treatment for her injuries in hospital.

The suspects in this incident also allegedly stole cash, jewellery and cell phones, and made away in an unknown vehicle.

Matumba issued some advice to domestic workers saying, “Domestic workers are advised to be more vigilant when they are busy doing their work inside or outside of the house. When outside the house always have your panic button with you. If you see any unknown people by the gate do not approach them or open for them if you are not expecting anyone.

“Always communicate with your employer if he or she is expecting people to come and do the work inside the house.”
