Helen Joseph Hospital has highest staff attendance rate in Gauteng

AUCKLAND PARK – According to unconfirmed data for the last two years, it appears that nurses have the lowest attendance rate.

Helen Joseph Hospital in Auckland Park is one of the not so many large hospitals in the whole of Gauteng that has the highest attendance rate from its staff members.

DA Gauteng Shadow Health MEC, Jack Bloom said that the Gauteng Health MEC Bandile Masuku’s response to his questions in the Gauteng Legislature revealed that Helen Joseph Hospital has the highest staff attendance at 93 per cent, followed by the Charlotte Maxeke  Academic hospital and Tembisa hospitals with 89 per cent attendance rate.

Bloom said Masuku attributed the low staff attendance rate of the other hospitals such as Baragwanath Hospital to the staff that takes or are on sick leave including those who are on the Policy and Procedure on Incapacity Leave and Ill-Health Retirement to assist departments in managing Incapacity Leave and Ill-Health Retirement (PILIR) and Family Responsibility leave.

“According to unconfirmed data for the last two years it appears that nurses have the lowest attendance rate,” Bloom said quoting Masuku.

Bloom said the Department of Health regards 90 per cent attendance as acceptable, ‘but 6 of the 7 largest public hospitals in Gauteng do not meet this standard which is worrying’.

“Our hospitals are highly stressed environments, so staff need to be managed properly to assist them in their jobs but also disciplined when they are absent without good reason or abuse sick leave.”
