Police rely on prayer and unity

MELVILLE – Police honour those passed on at Poppy's drive-by incident.

Police and pastors visited Poppys restaurant to pay tribute to those that passed away following a New Year’s Day shooting.

As members of the community and being the main source of crime prevention, fighting and awareness, Brixton Police Station’s members and management visited Poppy’s Restaurant in Melville recently. Accompanied by three pastors, the visit was aimed at engaging with role players in the area and paying their respect to those that passed on due to the drive-by shooting.

Spokesperson for the station, Jeanette Backhoff stated, “Members from Brixton police, together with three pastors went to Poppy’s Restaurant on the morning of 9 January to engage with the community and business owners in prayer, and to honour and give tribute to the victims who succumbed to the shooting incident that happened on New Year’s Day.”

The shooting took place just before 1am on 1 January when a black BMW X5 with false licence plates shot at the patrons of the restaurant. Backhoff stated that upon the arrival of the police at the scene they found paramedics attending to eight victims who had been shot, two of whom were certified dead. Backhoff also confirmed that they found four empty cartridges and four projectiles at the scene. Police have since launched a manhunt and an investigation into the case, which have not yielded positive results.
