Eskom said load-shedding was not expected today (21 January), even though the system was still constrained.
The power utility said they have sufficient capacity to meet demand as generation units come back online after maintenance and their emergency resources are at optimal levels in the event that they need to utilise them at short notice.
“Unplanned outages were at 12 812 MW as at 7 am this morning (21 January). Our teams are hard at work on both scheduled and unplanned maintenance. Our goal is to reduce breakdowns to below 9 500 MW in order to increase available capacity and limit the risk of load-shedding,” explained Eskom.
They said they were monitoring the system closely and would continue to give periodic updates on the status of the power system. They are therefore pleading with customers to continue to use electricity wisely to assist them to avoid or limit the level of load-shedding by doing the following:
- Set air-conditioners’ average temperature at 23ºC
- Switch off your geysers over peak periods
- Use the cold water tap rather than using the geyser every time
- Set your swimming pool pump cycle to run twice a day, three hours at a time for optimal energy use
- At the end of the day, turn off computers, copiers, printers and fax machines at the switch Avoid standby or sleep mode.
