Lets talk about Rates – City of Joburg wants to hear from you

JOBURG – The City has urged the public to attend the rates policy review meetings set to take place across all city-regions.

The new MMC for Finance, Jolidee Matongo says the City of Joburg is kicking off a rates review policy in citywide public meetings in multiple regions.

A statement issued out by Matongo he said the potential review from the City’s biggest property base means they can deliver basic services to residents of Johannesburg. “However, ensuring that property taxation is equitable and fair, requires a balancing act that must consider both the needs and wants of residents against affordability in the current economic climate. It’s time for residents to get involved and have their say on municipal property rates,” he said.

The review happens every year, it categorises all properties within the borders of Johannesburg and allows the City to generate rates revenue by assigning a tariff to the property values obtained in the General Valuation Roll, Matongo explained.

The City needs public participation in making these policies and the proposed changes in the Rates Policy for 2020/21 will be discussed in these areas:
