Celebrating the best of the best from Gauteng’s Class of 2019

FAIRLAND – Pretoria dominates the Class of 2019's top learners and schools in Gauteng.


MECs, premiers, ministers and mayors from across Gauteng celebrated the Class of 2019’s matric results.

With the Gauteng Province coming in at second in the country with a pass rate of 87.2 per cent for 2019, there was cause for celebrations. The Gauteng Department of Education invited the province’s top learners to honour them for their hard work and results. Learners and their loved ones were eager to hear just how well they did in comparison to other learners throughout Gauteng on 8 January at the Mosaiek Teatro in Fairlands.

The province’s top-performing schools all hailed from Pretoria as Hoërskool Garsfontein came first while Hoërskool’s Waterkloof and Menlopark finished second and third respectively. In addition to this, Gauteng’s top overall performing learners also came from Pretoria. Afrikaanse Hoër Meisieskool’s Megan Crystal Olickers was named the best overall learner while Karla van Dyk from Hoërskool Garsfontein and Lehlogonolo Hermina Letshela form Pretoria High School for Girls ended the year as the second and third best matric learners, respectively. Hoërskool Garsfontein was also named as the school in Gauteng with the most bachelor passes.

Learners with Special Education Needs (LSEN) schools that achieved remarkable results were also celebrated by those in attendance. Pretoria’s Transvalia Skool and Nuwe Hoop Skool were announced as the top two schools, in that order, while Muriel Brand School in the east of Gauteng finished third. The top LSEN learner in the province was Leandri Truscott from School of Achievement from Ekurhuleni. She managed to score, out of 300, 216 points for Afrikaans, 241 for English, 282 for tourism, 270 for mathematical literacy and 291 points for life orientation.

Top learners for individual subjects were also announced at the event. The province’s top mathematics learner was Neo Willie Makae of Kgatelopele Secondary School in Johannesburg West and the top learner in mathematical literacy was Khathutshelo Paul Maboko Tshepo from Ya Rona Secondary School in the south of Johannesburg. Hoërskool Garsfontein once again shined as their learners Karla van Dyk and Renate Coetzee were both named Gauteng’s top learners in English.

In total, 21 different school awards and 34 learner awards were handed out on the day.
