2019’s success sets the foundation for 2020

BRIXTON – Setting the bar even higher for 2020.

Local police have committed themselves to ensure that 2020 is better than 2019 for all.

Brixton Police Station will look to continue improving the safety and security of the precinct. The start of the new year comes with its own challenges but according to spokesperson for the station, Jeanette Backhoff, they are ready to get to work. Backhoff shared the 2020 goal for the station, “Our aim for 2020 is to have a crime-free community but we do know that it is unrealistic, therefore, we want to arrest all criminals and through our dedicated detectives bring them to justice and get good convictions.”

Backhoff also reflected on some of the successes they had in 2019, “We made 164 arrests in the first three months of the year, raised awareness to about 35 000 students so they don’t become victims of crime, had a 10-year conviction for a cell phone theft and another for a house robbery, and worked with (former) MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun to address liquor concerns in the Melville and Brixton region.”

This, along with their work carried out with the various security companies, made 2019 a productive year for them.

Backhoff made a special mention of their crime prevention groups for their commitment to making the community safer, “They are always going over and above the call of duty. Most of our policing targets are reached due to the commitment and hard work and extra unpaid hours by our crime prevention groups.” Backhoff and the station thanks them and their families for their unwavering support.

The year 2019 wasn’t all good for Brixton Police Station as they bid farewell to a few of their members. “Our lowlight for the year had to be the deaths of three of our members in 2019. Lieutenant Colonel Dlamini, Warrant Officer Lovemore and Constable Masango will continue to be missed in the new year as well.”

As everyone returns home and prepares themselves for school and work, the police urge the community to continue to support them as they fight crime. “We would like the community to keep on supporting us and to inform us of criminal activities in the community.”

The station is also looking forward to strengthening their relationships with role players in the community including residents, residents groups, business owners, security companies and others.
