JOHANNESBURG – Gauteng Premier David Makhura stated that only one school in Gauteng achieved a 50 per cent pass rate.

The provinces’ top-performing learners are being celebrated today (8 January) at the Mosaïek Teatro for the provincial matric results announcements, together with MEC of education Panyaza Lesufi.

Learners from all over the province have been trickling in all morning with their families, friends, principals and teachers.

MTN representative Mmabatho Sukati said the top achievers in Gauteng have sacrificed a lot to get here and their hard work will be fruitful. Sukati added that education is a great investment with the help of ICT networks and the partnership of government.

Panyaza Lesufi said, in some cases, township schools have outperformed urban schools and that technical schools are the future. He also emphasised that township education is growing and improving.

The highest bachelor passes are from Gauteng. Lesufi said the higher education department must build more universities to accommodate the growing numbers.

Lesufi said they want their children to create things that dominate the market and benefit the country. Lesufi also thanked the hard-working teachers in Gauteng for the work they have done to make these results a possibility.

Gauteng Premier David Makhura congratulated the matriculants of 2019, especially for reaching the over 80 per cent pass rate. He added that parents are the backbone of the education system as well as teachers.
