The inaugural Northcliff Melville Times has gotten off to a brilliant start. Messages with nominees are still coming in via all our platforms even though we have moved on to the voting stage. It’s great to see the readers of the Northcliff Melville Times participating in this initiative to celebrate those that made 2019 special, different and easier…

For those looking to vote but not too sure about who to vote for, below are short bios of our finalists and links to some of the work they have been part of this year. We hope this helps you make a decision for who you believe should walk away with one of the coveted awards.

Samantha Toweel-Moore: Founder of Growing Champions NPO
Toweel-Moore started and runs an NPO which empowers children who come from low-income groups and abusive, drug and gang-infested homes to find the champion within and lead their lives. Through soccer she has been able to develop these youngsters and keep them on the right track in school, on the sports field and in general.

Dauw Steyn: Chairperson of the Westdene-Sophiatown Residents Association
Steyn is a long-standing community activist that continues to prioritise the needs of the community. From crime to illegal advertising, he has led the residents association to deal with all matters facing them. Steyn is also known for his commitment and support of social events and activities in the community. Clearly nothing happens in these communities without him knowing about it.

Felicity Gratz-Lawlor: Founder of Let’s Work in Ward 88
If there’s one person who doesn’t wait for things to get done its Felicity Gratz-Lawlor and her Let’s Work team. Her non-stop engagement and interaction with the community ranges from clearing pavements of grass, weeds and litter, reporting street lights that aren’t working on a weekly basis, keeping residents informed with waste removal challenges and general information that a local resident may need.

Rosa Vucevic: Deputy Chairperson of the Westdene-Sophiatown Residents Association
A community builder of note. Vucevic is an integral part of the Westdene and Sophiatown community. She has played vital roles in the activities hosted by the resident’s associations over the years. From helping find funding and volunteers to getting her own hands dirty until the project is complete.
