Empowering women

MELVILLE – A group of Melville women who regularly walk the Melville Koppies on a Saturday got together to discuss issues of self-love and self-worth.

After issues about gender-based violence spread through the country in the past year, a group of Melville women who regularly walk the Melville Koppies on a Saturday got together to discuss issues of self-love and self-worth.

The inaugural Women’s Power Hike took place starting at Spilt Milk on 7th Street near the Melville Koppies East but this was so much more than a mere walk in the park.

“Exercise is so important for the brain, mind, and general health, so walking together and getting some exercise and then discussing issues that matter is great,” said Gaahele Mogkoro of the Women’s Power Hike.

The Women’s Power Hike serves to empower local women with the initial physical activity followed by an inspirational talk.

Mogkoro continued, “We love to walk as a team on a Saturday, but I also realised that women don’t have conversations together, and we need to talk about these issues. We have this idea of being the perfect woman that we learn from the media, but we never really speak about the issues that truly affect us.”

Guest speaker, TV personality Asanda Maku was invited to discuss these issues and personal issues with the women.

“We valued listening to her experiences and learning from them. One of the main things we can take from the discussion today is learning to love yourself, and to encourage other women to be the best that they can be.”

Mogkoro hopes to make the Women’s Power Hike a continual monthly event.
