According to Crime Stats South Africa (SA), the worst 10 precincts of crime for 2019 are areas around some of the country’s biggest city centres, these include Honeydew, Sandton, Midrand and the Joburg CBD.
For the stats to be captured, the crimes have to be reported to the nearest police station where the crime was committed between April 2018 to March 2019.
According to Crime Stats SA, the top 10 largest number of reported crimes committed are Joburg Central ranked fourth with 14 058 crimes reported, with Honeydew ranking sixth with 11 180 crimes reported.
Ivory Park, Joburg Central and Hillbrow all were in the worst 10 precincts for assault with the intent to inflict grievous bodily harm. The worst 10 precincts for common assault are Alexandra ranking fifth with 1 096 and Hillbrow ranking 10th with 1 008 cases reported to the police.
Honeydew, Joburg Central, Hillbrow were prominent once again for the worst 10 precincts for common robbery and robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Honeydew ranked in the top three for property-related crimes such as burglary at residential premises and theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle with a total of 1 930 crimes reported to the police.
Sandton was ranked fifth for other serious crimes, which include commercial crime with 1 029 cases reported, all theft not mentioned elsewhere with 2 143 cases reported and robbery at residential premises with a total of 221 crimes reported.
