Bears Wrestling celebrates a stellar year with 145 medals

EMMARENTIA – Local wrestlers turn in medals at SA Youth Championships.

Bears Wrestling is celebrating its second year and the achievements of its wrestlers are still pouring in.

Last year, the Marks Park Sports Club-based outfit won 125 medals at various tournaments and events. This year, they won a total of 145 medals.

This includes a bronze for Franco Geulpa, who has been wrestling for six years and won his first medal at the SA Youth Championships at the University of Pretoria this September.

Last year, the group sent one provincial wrestler to these youth championships. This year they sent eight wrestlers and won three medals there.

The Grové triplets (all 11) received their central Gauteng colours for their performances at the youth champs. These are Mieke, Marisan and Gerrie Grové.

Marisan won a gold medal in U15 girls freestyle while Mieke won a bronze in the same class.

Gerrie finished fourth in the U13 boys class.

A proud father and also Bears Wrestling head coach, Gerrie Grové said he was pleased with how his students performed and encouraged anyone interested in giving the sport a go to contact him.

“Everyone in our community is welcome to attend a training session to see what the sport is about,” he said.

“It teaches one discipline, hard work and how to face difficult and dangerous situations.”

The club caters for all ages, whether man or woman, boy or girl.
