The City says you can still pay you municipal account after hack fears
JOBURG – The City has put in placed safety measures after the computer breach, customers municipal accounts were not breached.
The City of Johannesburg was happy to announce earlier this week that it had made considerable progress with regards to restoring critical IT systems impacted by a recent cyber-attack.
MMC Finance for the City, Funzela Ngobeni said the City was taking precautionary steps. “The City implemented a full system shutdown, but have since put in place additional security and have managed to restore several customer-facing systems. These include the SAP Billing System; Land Information System; eHealth and Library services.”
The computer breach raised a number of concerns for customers around the safety and credibility of the City’s billing system, and customers are questioning whether or not to pay their municipal accounts.
Ngobeni assured customers that their municipal accounts were not breached. “I would like to assure all municipal account holders that our billing system has not been affected by the incident. I can further confirm that none of our customers’ personal or financial details were compromised following the cyber-attack.”
The MMC said they were aware that a majority of its customers have chosen month-end as their preferred due-date to pay their municipal accounts.
Customers can pay at following customer service centres across the City’s regions:
- Thuso House Customer Service Centre in Region F
- Waterfall Customer Service Centre in Region A
- Randburg Customer Service Centre in Region B
- Roodepoort Civic Centre in Region C
- Roodepoort City Hall in Region C
- Sandton Customer Service Centre in Region E
Alternative methods include EFT, EasyPay outlets (Pick n Pay and Checkers) or the Post Office.
All payments made through the above-mentioned methods will all be captured and reflected in the next municipal account statement cycle.
