Two dead after house robbery

SOPHIATOWN – Two have been arrested in connection with the murders.


Police have confirmed that an elderly couple were murdered in their home.

It has been a sad week for the community of Sophiatown following the murders of two elderly people. Sophiatown Police Stations spokesperson Captain TJ de Bruyn confirmed details of the heinous crime which started out as a house robbery. “On 19 October at about 12.55pm an elderly couple was found murdered in Annadale Street, Sophiatown. According to members of a security company, they saw a suspect assaulting the female victim and attempted to stop the suspect.”

The suspect then attempted to flee the scene and the security officer pursued the man and he was ultimately shot in the upper leg. Police were then called to the scene and that was when the elderly couple’s bodies were discovered. De Bruyn said, “Police were called to the scene and it was found that both victims had died. The female was aged 80 while the male victim was 82 years of age.”

The suspect that was shot was arrested with a second suspect arrested the following evening. De Bruyn stated that cases of murder and house robbery have been opened. He added that it is unknown at this stage if any other suspects were involved.
