Roosevelt Park Substation to be fully operational by early November

ROOSEVELT PARK – Early November date set for fully operational substation.

Revamped substation to be fully operational by the beginning of November.

The Roosevelt Park substation has been at the heart of many of the surrounding residents’ frustration due to continuous power outages throughout the years. The end of this problem is in sight as Mayor of Johannesburg Herman Mashaba announced that the substation’s revamp is set to complete in early November and become fully operational. On 16 October, Mashaba, along the MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services Nico De Jager had an oversight visit to the substation to check on the progress of R133 million upgrade.

At the root of the electrical woes caused by the substation was its aging infrastructure. Mashaba explained, “The reality is that the equipment at this substation, like many others across the city, was over 60 years old and long past its useful lifespan.” While on the visit City Power officials explained to Mashaba that while unforeseen delays had impacted negatively on the planned completion date, work would be accelerated to ensure that the project is completed and fully operational by early November 2019.

Despite these challenges, the project has made tremendous progress in that all the existing customers are now being supplied from the newly installed equipment at this substation stated the Mayor. The completion of the substation will make additional capacity available for customers. This includes the tremendous upgrade which will allow the substation to supply electricity to an additional 40,000 households.

Mashaba also wanted to thank the areas ward councillors for reporting and following up on various complaints by residents and businesses. He said, “I would like to thank the councillors from Region B, Cllr Beverley Weweje, Cllr Nicole Van Dyk, and Cllr David Hensman for taking the concerns of their communities to heart and making sure that they are kept informed of the positive work the multi-party government is doing to resolve their frustrations.”
