Mushrooming success

RANDBURG – The South African Mushroom Farmers' Association is aiming to raise over R600 000 for breast cancer survivors.

Have you stumbled across pink punnets of mushrooms during your last shop? If you have, it is because the South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association is aiming to raise over R600 000 for breast cancer survivors.

There are pink punnets of mushrooms available to purchase at Pick n Pay, and for every punnet sold, R1 is donated to women who have suffered from breast cancer.

The month of October is devoted worldwide to helping to raise awareness and gather support for the fight against breast, cervical and ovarian cancer in women.

“This is our 10th year of this initiative and we are keeping on pushing our cause. We want to help as many people as we can. The more donations we receive, the more people will benefit,” said Gina McLoughlin of the South African Mushroom Farmers’ Association.

Mushroom farmers from across the country have come on board with the association to help the cause.

Last year, the initiative named the Power of Pink gained over R600 000 in donations for the Reach 4 Recovery foundation, and this year they aim to do even better.

These women have been through the surgery process, but are less fortunate and cannot afford to have further surgery, prosthesis or bras.

McLoughlin added, “We put all of the donations together to purchase prosthesis and bras for these ladies. The best way to support this cause is to buy the specially packaged punnets of mushrooms throughout the month of October.”
