De La Salle Holy Cross College learners ‘Leave their print’

VICTORY PARK – The learners donated R10 or what they could afford towards the upgrading toilet facilities in several schools whose need was dire.

The De La Salle Holy Cross College learners paid R10 on Heritage Day to wear their flip flops for a good cause.

The money collected was donated to the Catholic Institute of Education to raise funds for the building or upgrading of toilet facilities in rural Catholic schools in South Africa.

Last year, the Catholic Institute of Education initiated the ‘Leave your print campaign’ to raise funds for the building or upgrading of toilet facilities in rural Catholic schools in South Africa after a survey indicated that many children deemed the toilet facilities in their schools to be unsafe.

There are 330 Catholic schools in the network which range from being extremely well-resourced to those that are very poorly resourced. All the Catholic schools in the country were invited to participate in the campaign by going to school barefoot for a day to show solidarity with learners who have to walk to school barefoot every day.

The learners also paid R10, or whatever they could afford. Last year’s campaign raised R390 000 which was used to upgrade the toilet facilities in several schools.

Director of Religious Education and Formation at De La Salle Holy Cross College, Mary Hyam, said, “The campaign has run successfully again this year and it is hoped that it will now become an annual event in all Catholic schools.”
