Melville house fire victim saved by Beagle Watch Response Officer

MELVILLE – Response officer risks his own life to save another.

Many claim they will do anything to save the life of another but how many of these people actually mean it.

Beagle Watch response officer Nathaniel Moyo recently saved the life of an elderly woman in a recent home fire incident. The heroic Moyo said that although there were natural fears about going into such environments, his duty to protect and serve gave him the strength and courage to do the task. “While the fire was absolutely terrifying, it is times like these where you need to think on your feet and act quickly. Although I absolutely love my job, I know that it is associated with life-threatening risks.”

Moyo detailed what transpired once he arrived at the scene, “When I arrived on the scene, bystanders were screaming that an elderly woman was trapped in her bedroom.”

Two other Beagle Watch response officers had arrived at the scene and together they devised a plan to help the woman.

First, they broke the window to allow fresh air in the room. They then hosed the room with water from a nearby tap and hosepipe in order to prevent the fire from further spreading into the room, while at the same time attempting to remove the burglar bars from the window. “The bars were particularly sturdy, and we eventually had to use the jack from our car to pry the bars open.”

The Beagle Watch team managed gently lift the woman through the window. She was then transported to hospital where she was treated for shock and smoke inhalation.

This wasn’t the first time Moyo put his life in harm’s way to save a community member. “I was previously also shot at, but I am totally dedicated to serving the community in which we operate. I would never be able to pass an incident where I could have made a difference by helping those in need.”

Beagle Watch managing director, Danna Strydom applauded Moyo’s efforts, “We are particularly proud of Moyo for risking his life while saving the life of another person.

“We are also relieved that the woman could be saved and we wish her a speedy recovery.”
