DLSHCC helps Build the Future

VICTORY PARK – The learners at the High School are taught good life skills by helping out at less fortunate organisations, giving of their time and caring for the future generations.

The learners from De La Salle Holy Cross College High School recently spent time helping out at Gogo’s Soup Kitchen in Soweto.

This wonderful project is headed by Ian Nettleton and his daughter, Hope, who met Gogo (Muriel Maseko) 15 years ago while planting gardens. The two struck up a bond with her.

Maseko gave everything she received away to the children of the community and started giving rolls at a soup kitchen for about 50 children.

Now, the non-profit organisation has now partnered with other organisations, such as Build the Future, where 150 children get fed every day except Sundays.

Nettleton said, “Together with organisations like Build the Future run by Phillip Shapiro, the De La Salle Holy Cross College community continue to faithfully help those who live with little privilege in their lives. Gogo started the initiative 15 years ago and together as a community we continue to strive to honour her vision of helping the children in Elias Motsoaledi Informal Settlement, Soweto.”

Sadly Maseko passed away about five years ago but this incredible organisation does everything to honour her. Build the Future hopes to build half a netball court in the next year to get a skills centre going for the local community as well as a library for the children in the community.

Jenny Duffy from De La Salle Holy Cross College said, “These initiatives for and by the high school learners teach them the importance of giving back to the community, giving to others less fortunate through their time.”
