Pet services to be given for free on Heritage Day

SOPHIATOWN – Getting your pets ticked off on Heritage Day.

Animal welfare group to celebrate Heritage Day with the community.

Animal Anti-Cruelty League (AACL) is looking forward to 24 September as they plan to spend the public holiday with the residents of Sophiatown and Westbury. Marketing manager Carren Nickloes has invited the public to join them. “We will be at our usual spot in Sophiatown and will be thanking the community by offering free vaccinations, deworming, and tick/flea treatments from 9am to 1pm to our existing clients.

The league’s Johannesburg branch has been servicing these communities for over 63 years. They do this by offering veterinary services to those who cannot afford regular veterinary treatments through their hospital and mobile clinic. They also take in stray and unwanted animals and run an adoption programme. The AACL sets up their mobile clinic twice a month at the Sophiatown Police Station to give free medical screenings to the pet owners of Sophiatown, Westdene, Westbury and surrounding areas. During these screenings they also offer vaccinations and sterilisation for those interested.

In addition to the service on hand, there will also be a dedicated story time on the day. Tony and Friends will take place at 10am and 12pm for the children. Pets that have already been vaccinated can still come to the mobile clinic for other services, according to Nickloes. “Even if your pet is up to date with vaccinations, come along for a deworming or tick/flea treatment. We will also be offering microchips for the first 30 existing clients, one per family.”

In addition to the list of services offered by the AACL, Nickloes said, “We educate the youth on responsible pet ownership through our education officer, while our inspectors educate before they prosecute and ensure animal living conditions are improved wherever they may find themselves.”
