The Six C’s way of learning

FAIRLAND – The high school has incorporated the project into everyday learning in hopes to teach the learners about leadership, critical thinking and cultural competence among other things.

Radford House High School have incorporated the Six C’s project this year in which the learners are divided into groups of about seven people to help them learn about bettering the community, engagement and interaction with the problems faced in our country and communities.

The Six C’s project aims to teach the learners about critical thinking, creativity, cultural competence, citizenship, collaboration and communication among themselves and the greater community. Teacher from Radford House High School, Ponjul Zwalda, explained, “All the learners were split into about seven groups from Grade 8 to 11 and had to come up with viable ideas on bettering the Fairland community, make a difference and help community members access basic skills.”

This project started at the beginning of this year and the ‘We Need Coffee!’ group said, “This new approach to learning will help us and future learners about virtues and attributes needed in leaders especially in the community. After much discussion, the topic of unemployment seemed consistent in South African youth and we knew we could help with change. We hope to be able to provide basic employment and skills to those who need it the most. Skills such as gardening, bookkeeping, shop assistants, and cooks in small restaurants by getting in touch with local business owners and identifying much-needed skills and labour.

Fébe Groenewald one of the leaders of the ‘We Need Coffee!’ group said, “By implementing our project and identifying skills sets needed by local business owners we hope to decrease crime in our neighbourhood, keep it safe and give people willing to learn more skills and experiences. Our motto is; Think global, work global, this is not just a project for this year but one we hope will become the culture for future learners of Radford House to give back and care for our community.”
