Abbotts College end Women’s Month with a reflection session

NORTHCLIFF – Learners remind us that we should all fight for women's equality.

Women’s Month might have ended, but lessons taught during this time will remain with some forever.

Abbotts College is one of many schools that dedicated time and energy to honouring women and their experiences. The school is a firm believer in celebrating efforts of the 20 000 women who marched to the Union Building on 9 August 1956. Although things have changed, the learners are fully aware that there is still a long way to go to fully emancipate woman from socio-economic discrimination.

Abbotts College has been home to many spectacular women as well, many of whom learnt from the previous principal, Sheldine van Buren, who retired in 2018.

The school said the following women have shown time and time again that they are unafraid to be themselves and excel at everything they do:

  • Lynette Hallatt is a phenomenal teacher with an admirable will to overcome every challenge in her path.
  • Amore Blignaut is kind and cares for her learners. She is supportive and always willing to assist.
  • Germari Eksteen is extremely passionate, helpful and influential.
  • Vanishree Abrahams is one of the most knowledgeable people around and all value her opinion.
  • Raeesah Sheikh and Pam Raper are very helpful and caring.
  • Carissa Barrows is an awesome teacher and extremely caring to her learners.
  • Renie Sutherland is very determined and works very hard.

The learners of Abbotts wanted to share a special message with all women, Grade 11 Noluthando Zondi said, “Thank you for everything you do, and never forget the power you possess in changing the world.”

The school also urge all women to know their worth and stand up for themselves regardless of the situation and concluded that every woman is entitled to equality as it is their birth-given right and we should all fight to see this right being experienced.
