KDVP taught to say NO to alcohol and drugs

VICTORY PARK – The learners were able to hear first-hand stories on addiction and how lives have been ruined because of alcohol, drug, and substance abuse.

Grade 10 learners at King David Victory Park High School participated in a presentation on addiction awareness.

Three special guests talked to the youngsters about not making the same mistakes they had made. Nic Ingel, a recovering alcoholic and Dovi Teperson, a recovering drug addict, shared their personal journeys of sobriety, while Liane Lurie, an ex-learner at the school and psychologist working in the field of substance abuse, spoke about the effects of substances on the developing teenage brain.

Addiction is known as a psychological and physical inability to stop consuming a drug including alcohol which is readily available, even though it is causing harm in the users’ lives and those around them. The school felt that it is important for the learners to be aware of such issues that face youth on a daily basis and know the telltale signs when it comes to friends, family or themselves.

Addiction Awareness month will be in September this year but it is always important for youth to learn about the rising issue of drug and substance dependence.

Gita Lipschitz, a counsellor at King David Victory Park said, “Hearing the real-life, harrowing stories of Jewish people in our community is a very powerful way of educating our children.”
