Beware of fake City Power notice

NORTHCLIFF – Watch out, bogus City Power employees are trying to get into your home.

Residents of Northcliff have been warned by the City Power utility that there is a false notice being circulated in the area.

According to the spokesperson of City Power Isaac Mangena, the notice states there will be work done to electricity meters. “The notice informs residents of what it calls a process to move meters from the houses to the protective structures outside the house.”

Mangena said the notice was not issued by City Power and that residents should not allow these bogus notices to catch them off-guard.

The noticee said the work would be done on 30 July between 8am and 4pm. Since then, City Power have been informing the public via social media and ward councillors about the notice. Mangena said, “We would like to ask the residents to be vigilant and not allow any person who claims they are from City Power access, especially those who say they are there to remove meters from the house to outside.”

He said do not have any projects to remove meters from inside houses to outside.

Mangena stated that the note itself is visibly a scam. “The notice is badly written and is using the wrong letterhead and font. It also does not have any contact person at the end.”

City Power stated that their staff and contractors are identifiable via their City Power identity cards. These cards will be coded for specific sections within City Power. They will also display a photo of the employee, name, identification number and an expiry date. Should residents suspect any suspicious behaviour or individuals, they are advised to contact the nearest police station or security company.

Residents should also verify the credentials of any person claiming to be City Power contractor by calling their Security Risk Control Unit on 011 490 7900/11.
