Budding writers, essay writing competition extends deadline entries

JOBURG – The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation annual Youth Essay Writing Competition Against Racism has extended their deadline after peak interest from young people.


The Ahmed Kathrada Foundation listened to numerous requests from young people between the ages of 15 and 25 across the country wishing to take part in their annual Youth Essay Writing Competition Against Racism to extend their entries’ deadline. 

The official deadline was 31 July, late submissions can now be handed in by 22 August.

Jessica Mofokeng from the Ahmed Kathrada Foundation said the foundation received over 200 entries from young people across the country when the competition was announced, “Based on the submissions we have received already, it is clear that young people are concerned and are already talking about the issue of racism. Through their submissions, we are delighted that the youth have taken the initiative of articulating their thoughts in some of the South African official languages.”

The writing topics are:

  • #UniteAgainstRacism
  • Race is not real, but racism is
  • Othering and belonging
  • Racism in South African schools, a thing of the past?

The essay should be between 1 000 to 1 400 words, the submission must be original, include the participant’s name and surname, chosen topic, age, postal address and their contact number.

Applications can be sent via email to youth@kathradafoundation.org, by post to P.O. Box 3240, Lenasia, 1820 or hand-delivered at the Kathrada Foundation offices at Signet Terrace Office Park, Block B, Suite 2–19 Guinea Fowl Street, Ext 1, Lenasia, Johannesburg.
