Sector 3 crime forum’s Security Expo 2.0 on the cards

SOPHIATOWN – Can't wait for the next security expo? Attend the community's monthly crime forum meeting.

After the first security expo by Sophiatown Sector 3 crime forum went well on 20 July, a second one is in the works according to the chairperson of the forum.

Andrew Burger, chairman of the forum and organiser of the expo shared details saying that the next security expo will be held next month and will be bigger and better. “I was very happy with how the first one went. The event was so successful we are currently planning to have another one in September. It will be two times the size and we look forward to putting residents, businesses and role players in security all in the same place again.”

The expo which was held on 20 July was hosted as a chance for residents, police, security companies, metro police, emergency services and community groups all the same space to meet and discuss issues facing them. MMC for Public Safety Michael Sun and Sophiatown Police Station Commander Brigadier Alfred Ndebele were present at the expo and meet various members of the community.

Take a look at what MMC Michael Sun and Andrew Burger, chairman of the forum, had to say about the expo:

Burger said these expos are beneficial as they, along with the sectors monthly meetings, give the community a chance to exchange information on what is happening in the area. He added that issues such as drug usage and dealing at the Albertsville swimming pool, camps in Alberts Farm, public drinking at bottle stores, housebreakings and theft and brothels are some of the biggest issues in the Sector 3.

The crime forum is inviting residents in the following areas to their monthly meetings:

The meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month and the next one will be on 20 August at 7pm at the Roosevelt Park Bowling Club. Crime statistics and trends are addressed at the meeting by the police, metro police, security companies and other role players. Burger concluded, “We use these meetings to bring the community closer. Lots of people have lots of complaints and these give them the chance to direct them to the relevant people. Those that are afraid to share information with the police can come to the meetings, tell us and we will send the message to them.”
