Abbotts College learners made their mark on Mandela Day, 18 July by packing packets of soup, rice and lentils to donate to the Dorcas Project – a group of local churches that run a soup kitchen every week.
Their 67 minutes started around 1.45pm where groups of learners came down from their classes to help prepare the packets.

Renie Sutherland from the school said, “The whole idea is for the Dorcas Project to be able to give those in need the soup packets and all they will need is to boil the packs with water for a meal. What we have done is look at nutritional value, how we can help to give a meal for that day. Our aim is to get 620 individual soup packets and sponsor those. After the learners finish packing the individual packets, I will [transport] the packs on the next day.”
The college prepared various stations for the learners to come pack the packets. There was a hand-washing station, a rice station, lentils station, soup station and a station where others closed the packets and packed them into bags for the Dorcas Project.

“In total, the project took 67 minutes of the learners’ school time and they were each able to sponsor R67 beforehand to buy the soup ingredients as well as to give their time on the day,” explained Sutherland.
“We feel that it is important they also contribute their time and, in that, learn a valuable lesson about empowering others through acts of kindness.”
