UPDATE: Claw confirm that no shots have been fired at Northcliff’s baboon

NORTHCLIFF – No shots fired at runaway baboon says Claw.

The Baboon is still on the loose.

Residents and members of the public have been advised to continue being on the lookout for the elusive baboon making its way through the Northcliff region.

Community Led Animal Welfare (Claw) has been on the ground with the assistance of SCP Security trying to capture the animal.

The baboon was last seen around Northcliff Corner and an old age home near the shopping complex. Claw and security companies are still searching for the animal.

There have been reports that those pursuing the baboon have fired shots at it.

Cora Bailey of Claw has come out and rejected these rumours. She said, “People are accusing the security companies of shooting at the baboon and it’s all false.”

Claw’s Hassan Kassim, who has been traveling with the trap that will be used to safely capture the baboon, also confirmed that no shots have been fired at it nor any violence directed towards it.

He stated that they will capture the baboon in a humane manner. Kassim added that security companies assisting them have been using their network of contacts and knowledge of the area to help them get closer to the baboon, a contribution that they are grateful for.

Clive Maher, managing director of SCP Security replied to the rumours about his team shooting at the baboon. He said, “We wish to place on record that at no such time were any shots fired by any member of SCP Security at the baboon, or in any manner whatsoever. We are all animal lovers and conservationists and would never harm an innocent and scared animal.”

From as early as 9am SCP Security had deployed their team to assist with catching the baboon. Along with Claw, they came into contact with it at Northcliff Corner around 12pm on 17 July.

Within seconds the baboon made a run for it and managed to get away before it could be caught.

Bailey stated that the animal is not dangerous and this was evident by the way it evaded all human contact during its Northcliff Corner pursuit.

She said, “These baboons do not seek confrontation, it is extremely terrified.” She added that Claw has captured any baboons in the past and they will be able to do it again. They are asking the public to assist them by sending their location/address to them if they see the baboon.
