Toxicology report still in progress

SOPHIATOWN – Like mourning mothers, police are also awaiting the toxicology report.

Police are still awaiting the toxicology report in a case involving two dead toddlers.

With the families and friends of two Westdene toddlers waiting for answers, Sophiatown police have stated they are still awaiting the results of the eagerly anticipated toxicology report. Spokesperson for the station, Captain TJ de Bruyn said, “Unfortunately the toxicology report has not come out yet.”

He went on to say that these reports do take long to process and finalise.

The toxicology report will help identify what the cause of the two toddlers’ deaths was. It is alleged that the two consumed rat poison on the property of their pre-school. The day-care centre has since been closed and authorities are doing all they can to ensure that this incident does not take place again.

On 26 June the City of Johannesburg MMC for Health and Social Development Dr Mpho Phalatse and her team visited the Sophiatown and Westdene region to inspect early childhood development centres, as reported in the Northcliff Melville Times article City concerned after death of children [Week ending 21 June]. On the day, five centres were inspected and two were closed down due to the lack of safety for the children there.

Police stated that as soon as the results are available, they will be shared with the families.
