Sophiatown police have identified a suicide victim and notified his family

GREYMONT – Police have identified the body found hanging in the park.


Local police have confirmed that the body found hanging in a park recently was a suicide.

On the morning of 19 June, a body hanging from the tree of Greymont Park scared many who walked through the park and those living nearby. By 7am, Sophiatown Police Station and ER24 paramedics where at the park and had closed off the scene to the public.

Colonel Devan Govender from Sophiatown police confirmed that it was indeed a suicide and shared details of the case. “The victim did commit suicide and he has been identified. He was a 21-year-old white male and his family has been notified of the incident.”

Russel Meiring, a spokesperson for ER24, said the man was dead by the time they arrived. “On assessment, medics found that the man had been dead for some time. Nothing could be done for him and he was pronounced dead.”
