Youth orchestra to rock Brixton

BRIXTON – Communtiy invited to witness the very best of youth orchestras.

The National Youth Wind Orchestra will be returning for this year’s edition of their Winter Winds performance.

Prepare yourself for a night of exquisite music as the National Youth Wind Orchestra will be returning to Brixton to perform on 30 June. They are inviting the public to their show to witness and experience some of the best musical talent the country has to offer. This year’s programme will be featuring new local compositions and wind ensemble standards from across the world. Sophia Welz, managing director of the South African National Youth Orchestra, said that the orchestra will be conducted by brass lecturer at the University of the Free State, George Foster.

Welz shared details on the work and composition of the orchestra, “The National Youth Orchestra hosts top quality orchestral courses to fine-tune the skills of South Africa’s best young musicians each holiday. The concerts are held at the end of the course and are a platform to showcase the talent of these exceptional young artists. The musicians, aged between 13 and 25, are drawn from across South Africa and are from not only the major metropoles, but also range from outlying areas. This ensures that the orchestra will be truly representative of South Africa.”

What makes this musical spectacle different, is that there isn’t really an entrance fee. Instead, those attending the event are asked to make a donation at the door. “We rely on donations and welcome contributions to our bursary fund that makes access to world class education possible for all of our talented musicians,” Welz said.

The orchestra is currently supported by the Academy of Sound Engineering, Friends of Orchestral Music Cape Town, the Samro Foundation, Classic 1027, the North-West University, KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and individual donors.

One of the beneficiaries from the orchestra, Sakhile Humbane, spoke about how this programme has changed their life. “I’ve learnt a tremendous amount about orchestral and wind ensemble playing that I would never have received from anywhere else in South Africa, not to mention the amazing friends I’ve had the opportunity to make.

“This is the most wonderful experience I have had thus far in my life. It’s an opportunity to play fantastic music, make wonderful friends and see new places.”
