Johnson remembered on anniversary

GREYMONT – Family and friends from across the country paid tribute to Kit Johnson by wearing green on the anniversary of his death on 4 June.

A year has passed since the alleged murder of Greymont resident Kit Johnson.

Family and friends from across the country paid tribute to him by wearing a green ribbon on the anniversary of his death on 4 June to the end of the month.

Family member Tracey Hagen said, “I cannot believe that a year has already passed since we lost Kit. Even though it is the anniversary, we still reflect on his memory every day. As friends and family, we only hope that justice can be served soon.”

A post on the Justice for Kit Johnson Facebook group said, “Today marks a year that you were so cruelly and unjustly taken from all who love you. We miss you and think of you every day. We will not give up the fight for justice. May your beautiful soul RIP, dear Kit.”

Last year, a suspect was arrested under suspicion of the kidnapping and murder of Johnson and first appeared in court on 10 July 2018.

The suspect’s actual trial has yet to begin because of various delays, including the collection of evidence, trial readiness, and centralisation of the trial due to evidence being found in multiple provinces.

The post continued, “There have been so many postponements – Let’s get the trial going and arrest all those involved so that justice may be served.”

Earlier this year, Greenpeace South Africa arranged for a commemorative plaque on a park bench, and a tree to be planted at a dam in the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens in Johnson’s memory.

The suspect will next appear in the Johannesburg Magistrates’ Court on 8 July.
