Winter is here and our attempts to stay warm include layers of clothes, gloves, scarfs and heaters on full heat but in an energy-scarce country we need to be careful with our electricity use.
State utility Eskom provided several easy ways we can keep warm without it costing you:
- Time to layer up dress up for this winter, it is a changing season after all. Don’t be shy to add those layers when the temperatures drop even lower
- Before you put on that heater, get cosy with your blanket, grab some throws, pull on some thick socks and get your favourite hot beverage and dunk in some rusks
- Surprisingly, electric blankets are actually energy friendly, to make yours more energy sufficient, turn it on to the highest setting for a few minutes and then turn it off for the rest of the night before you get into bed
- There is nothing better than a hot morning shower but keep them short this winter
- When making your morning cup of coffee or tea, just boil enough water for those few cups
- Thaw your frozen foods overnight to avoid defrosting it in the microwave
- Unplug your cell phone charger before you leave the house, the charger uses electricity even if your phone is not plugged in
- Turn the heater on in rooms that you will spend time in and use the timer function that will turn of heaters automatically
- Turn off your geyser before you leave for work in the morning and turn it on before you go to bed.
