Twelve years of tradition to continue

FAIRLAND – The fête promises food and entertainment for the whole family.

On 2 June, Moth Cottesloe Homes will again host their annual fête, which members of the public are invited to come and support. This annual fundraising event is in its twelfth year.

The home was first situated in the area of Cottesloe in Auckland Park, but as a result of the city council’s plan to build a road through the middle of the complex, they moved to where they currently stand in Fairland. The complex houses about 56 ex-servicemen and their spouses.

Organiser of this year’s fundraising event Mary Ann Miljo said, “We didn’t want to leave the planning until very late, so I started getting the word out about two months ago and going to ask for donations at different supermarkets. Among the many donations we have received are baking supplies, and myself and some other residents will bake cakes, which will be sold at the fête.”

She explained that this year there will be 16 stalls hired out to the public and 10 stalls inside the complex for residents. The Jannie Smuts Parade will take place as well, and the Irish pipe band promises to entertain attendees. The fête will start at 9am on Sunday and is expected to finish at about 3 or 4pm. Entrance is free of charge, and items sold at the different stalls include donated furniture, home-made jewellery, and much more.

This is Miljo’s first year of organising the event and she said that the past few weeks have been very busy, as she has been making sure everything will go smoothly. “We have this fundraising event once a year and we try put everything into it for the residents, and, of course, all the proceeds go into giving them a better quality life.”

A big part of the fête are the raffles, where the attendees can win one of a kind prizes, such as special handcrafted and unique donated items.
