City of Joburg hosts Kenyan delegates

JOHANNESBURG – The City of Johannesburg welcomes Kenyan delegates.

The City of Johannesburg’s Department of Economic Development recently hosted Kenyan delegates in an information-sharing platform at the City’s council chambers.

The delegates were welcomed by MMC for Economic Development Leah Knott and City Manager Dr Ndivhoniswani Lukhwareni.

The City said the aim of the engagement was to share knowledge and how to implement strategies and to give advice on practical issues related to improving Kenya’s local economic development processes.

The visiting delegation consisted of the Ideas Technical Implementation team, the Kenyan State Department of Devolution, Kenyan National Treasury and Council of Governors and Kenya School of Government.

One of the Kenyan delegates James Mwanzia said, “Our desire is to see what we can borrow in South Africa to help us in development of local initiatives in order to strengthen local economic development and tackle the rate of unemployment because we are all developing Africa together and we want to learn from one another.”

Lulama Ndlovu from the Economic Development Department showed the delegates how Johannesburg is tackling youth unemployment through opportunity centres. “These opportunity centres play as a business model for SMMEs and in skills development in order to empower the youth,” said Ndlovu.
