Wits University student stabbed at school library

BRAAMFONTEIN – A case of assault has been opened with the Hillbrow Police Station after a student was stabbed at the university.


Wits University received a report that a student had been stabbed by another student at the Wartenweiler Library on the afternoon of 22 May.

According to a statement released by Wits on their Facebook page, “The victim was transported by Wits Campus Protection Services to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital where he was treated for an injury on the face and discharged.”

Spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station Sergeant Mduzizi Zondo confirmed that the incident took place on 22 May. He said, “The student was hit with an unknown object by a fellow student. A case of assault has been opened and the suspect was arrested on 23 May.”

The university said in the statement that it is providing counselling support to the victim.

The statement also said the university condemns all forms of violence. “Weapons are strictly prohibited on campus and anyone found with a dangerous object may be subjected to an internal disciplinary hearing and/or be reported to the South African Police Services for investigation and prosecution.”
