Case of assault opened after student stabbed at Wits

BRAAMFONTEIN – A student has been stabbed by another and a case of assault opened with the Hillbrow Police Station.

WITS University received a report that one student had been stabbed by another student at the Waterweiler Library on the afternoon of 22 May.

Wits released a statement on their Facebook page and confirmed the incident, “The victim was transported by Wits Campus Protection Services to Charlotte Maxeke Hospital and was later discharged.”

Spokesperson for Hillbrow Police Station Sergeant Mduzizi Zondo also confirmed that the incident took place on 22 May. He said, “The student was hit with an unknown object by a fellow student. A case of assault has been opened and the suspect was arrested on 23 May.”

The University said that it will provide counselling support to the victim and condemns all forms of violence saying, “Weapons are strictly prohibited on campus and anyone found with a dangerous object may be subjected to an internal disciplinary hearing and/or be reported to the South African Police Services for investigation and prosecution.”
