City Parks awaits feedback on funding for park ranger

WESTDENE – Police to continue monitoring Westdene Dam while looking for a permanent solution.

City Parks is busy assessing their security model options for Westdene Dam which was the subject of residents’ frustrations earlier in March following constant crime trends taking place at the dam.

In an attempt to tackle this, Johannesburg’s City Parks and Zoo has been going over a few potential strategies to secure the park. Jenny Moodley, spokesperson of City Parks said, “We are awaiting feedback from the general manger for facilities management to advise if the park in Westdene is set to secure insourced security personnel.”

Moodley stated that in addition to this, the City of Johannesburg is also reviewing an outsourced security model for the park.

Nearby residents were fed up with the fact that they had to secure the park to ensure the safety of their homes and community. City Parks and Zoo, which deals with parks in Johannesburg, confirmed that budget constrains barred them from being able to assign a park ranger to the dam to patrol the park at all times.

While City Parks awaits confirmation on a long-term security solution for Westdene Dam, City Parks has organised with other park rangers and Metro police to continue monitoring the area. Moodley stated that random patrolling activities are conducted often by the rangers and Metro police.
