Road Accident Fund (RAF) helps Pikitup train over 200 truck drivers in defensive driving course

JOHANNESBURG – The course aimed to empower Pikitup drivers to avoid and predict potential accidents or situations.

The City of Johannesburg MMC for Environment and Infrastructure Services, councillor Nico de Jager said in a statement that 242 Pikitup truck drivers had successfully completed their defensive driving course.

Pikitup offered a free defensive course to their employees which was made possible through a partnership agreement with the Road Accident Fund (RAF) who paid for the cost of the training, which totalled an amount of R150 000. De Jager said RAF offered the training as part of their initiative to enable drivers to avoid accidents when possible, especially delivering on quality and timely services to Joburg residents.

He said, “[The aim of the training was] to empower Pikitup drivers to prevent and avoid accidents in the congested streets of the City of Johannesburg.”

Skills acquired by the drivers were:

  • Driving in a manner that identifies road hazards in a predictable manner by using safe driving strategies
  • To anticipate potential accidents or situations and make informed decisions to avoid them
  • Overcoming negative distractions such as fatigue, stress and road rage
  • To increase focus on the driving task including instructions given for creating a positive mindset when behind the wheel.

The 242 drivers who completed the course now add to the 1 100 public drivers that have already received defensive training offered by the RAF.
