ERA addresses issue of events taking place in Emmarentia

EMMARENTIA – Residents Association addresses residents' issues with events that are held in the area.

EMMARENTIA – Marks Park, Emmarentia Dam and the Johannesburg Botanical Gardens are no strangers to hosting some of Johannesburg’s biggest events.

The Emmarentia Residents Association (ERA) noted that although these events do put smiles on the faces of those in attendance they also irritate and frustrate nearby residents. Speaking on the matter at ERA’s Annual General Meeting was Anne Askew, head of the green spaces and events portfolio. She apologised to residents for the inconveniences caused by road closures, noise associated with the events and damaging of property during these events.

In 2018, there were 14 major events held at Marks Park and Emmarentia Dam. These included the annual Juma and Jura races, Colour run and marathons. The ERA has noted that these events resulted in residents complaining about the disrespect homeowners face from participants. Askew vowed to ensure that they tackle this. “We will be focusing more on the noise levels, illegal parking and other issues we face during these times.”

ERA has approved of eight major events to take place in Emmarentia this year. These will take place on 24 March, 3 April, 4 May, 28 July, 4 August, 9 August, 11 August and 17 August. Askew said they will ensure that these events do not disturb the community as much as they have in the recent past. She added that it is not only the ERA that is responsible for sharing details of events with the community but organisers and residents themselves.

The damaging of property and mess associated with these events was also addressed. Askew said, “Organisers usually put down a damage deposit. This money is given back if all is well after the event or withheld if the opposite.”

She said this is one of the ways they try to hold organisers responsible and added that organisers also donate money to the ERA which is used for projects that aim at keeping Emmarentia as beautiful as possible.
