Police note scam targeting the Road Accident Fund

BRIXTON – Police to scrutinise those opening cases to defraud the Road Accident Fund.

Police have warned the public of new scam where people with disabilities are being targeted to get compensation from the road accident fund.

Brixton Police Station is advising people living with disabilities to be wary of an increasingly popular trend. Spokesperson for the station, Jeanette Backhoff, explained how the scam works. “A new scam has been doing its round in the community lately where scammers are searching for people with disabilities. Scammers get these people to cases of reckless and negligent driving to be able to claim from the Road Accident Fund.”

Backhoff is alerting people involving themselves in such cases that they are committing perjury, which is a very serious crime.

“These cases are false and the perpetrators will be charged with perjury, which is making an untrue statement under oath.”

She went on to say that those found guilty of this will face the consequences of their actions as it is a criminal offence and punishable by law.

To address the issue the police and the Road Accident Fund (RAF) will be paying extra attention to such cases. They are both advising the public to stray from opening false cases. Backhoff concluded, “The law is set in place to protect the public. The RAF is in place for people who truly have suffered from accidents and should not be defrauded, depriving true claims from being processed.”
