ROSSMORE – Learners cheered on by their parents and teachers at Apax's sports day.

ROSSMORE – Auckland Park Academy of Excellence (Apax) hosted their ninth annual sports day to showcase and exercise a different side of their learners.

The cool and cloudy weather on the morning of 9 March was perfect for the academy as they hosted their 2019 sports day at the Vorentoe High School grounds.

On the day, their learners were kitted in the house colours of green, yellow or blue and they competed in a range of serious athletic categories and some unique and fun race formats. The racing was certainly competitive but there was a jovial and enthusiastic mood among learners, parents, educators and all present.

The day kicked off with an impressive and well-synchronised march by the learners followed by a prayer which was delivered by their Grade 8 learner Yusuf Kola. Friends and family were then greeted and addressed by the school’s principal, Suliman Ismail, and Grade 9 learner Ammarah Hoosen presented a reading titled the Code of the Athlete.

Apart from the traditional athletics races such as 100m sprints and relay, the little ones of the academy got a chance to showcase their skills by having a go at an egg-and-spoon race, sack race and bean bag race.

After all the athletes gave their best, the Eagles managed to come out at the top, winning the sports day. The Falcons came in second, followed by the Hawks. The spirit trophy was awarded to the Hawks. The senior victor trophy was shared by Eesa Haffejee and Muhammad Carrim and senior victrix was won by Zeenat Moosa. The junior victor was awarded to Zayn Rooknoodeen and junior victrix was awarded to Maseeha Desai.
