Linden Police Station warns to never pay a police officer

LINDEN – The police station warns residents of activity in the area that aims to scam victims of their money.

LINDEN – The police are warning residents of fraudulent police activity that has reached the area and the targeting of victims.

Communication and social crime officer for the Linden Police Station Constable Takalani Matumba said, “Linden police would like to warn the community about the activity that is happening around our area to those people whom their vehicle was stolen or hijacked.”

She explained how victims are lured into these fraudulent activities. “You will receive a call from a person who will pretend to be a police officer. The person will tell you all the details of your stolen vehicle and will also tell you that your vehicle was recovered and is presently being held at the certain police station. They will also tell you that your vehicle will be held at that certain police station for a period of seven months.

The person will offer to do you a favour to get your vehicle within a week and will tell you that the vehicle will be dropped off and handed to you at the police station.”

Matumba warned that the person posing as a police officer will tell the victim that the process is called an emergency release.

“The fraudsters will ask for a certain amount of money for you to pay for the car to be released.”

Matumba said the station would like to warn the community about this scam. She also emphasised that no money should be paid to any police officer to release a stolen vehicle and that there is no such thing as an emergency release.

If anyone comes across this kind of fraud, kindly contact your nearest police station.
