164 arrests in 50 days

BRIXTON – Just over 3 arrests a day on average for this police station.


BRIXTON – Police have arrested 164 suspects since the beginning of the year.

With crime being a constant fear of South Africans, Brixton Police Station has been hard at work to make their community a safer place. As of 19 February this year, the station was responsible for arresting 164 suspects for a wide range of crimes since 1 January.

According to the station spokesperson, Jeanette Backoff, this is a sign that they are committed to reducing crime in the area. She said, “These arrests are proof that the members stationed at Brixton Police Station are working hard to not only prevent crime but to catch the perpetrators.”

Of the 164 arrests made, here are some of the crimes and number of suspects arrested:

  • Attempted murder – 1
  • Illegal possession of firearm and ammunition – 2
  • Possession of stolen motor vehicle – 3
  • Rape – 3
  • Burglary at residential premises – 8
  • Driving under the influence – 12
  • Shoplifting – 13
  • Possession of and dealing in drugs – 15
  • Possession of stolen property – 15
  • Assault with the intention to cause grievous bodily harm – 23.

These, with other mentioned arrests, resulted in Brixton police being able to arrest, on average, 3.28 suspects a day since the start of the year.

Backoff applauded everyone involved in these arrests. “We have a team of dedicated Client Service Centre personnel, as well as members from our Crime Prevention Unit, sector managers, reservists and detectives. All of these units play a role in making sure that the community are safe and kept safe at all times.”
