Residents anger over an abandoned property

BRIXTON – "There was a full house and day by day, brick by brick it became like this. There was no demolition," says neighbouring resident.

BRIXTON – Neighbouring residents of an abandoned property in Brixton are fed up with the state of it.

What started six years ago has now become a massive problem for the residents living near the property on the corner of Caroline and Kew streets. Where there was once a house, has now become a place for displaced people who apparently sift through collected recyclables and a dumping ground for others.

One of the residents Ridhwan Essop has urged local authorities to do something about it as soon as possible.

Essop said, “We have seen this property become dilapidated over the last six years. There was a full house and day by day, brick by brick it became like this. There was no demolition.”

Due to constant dumping, there is now a foul stench coming from the property that lingers in the air. Domestic refuse and dirty nappies can be seen as you walk around the property. There is also no running water or sewerage infrastructure for the people who live on the property.

Fires have also been a problem on the property. The most recent fire occurred on 21 January and was allegedly caused by a domestic dispute. Essop said, “This is the third fire that I can recall. It resulted in the burning of a neighbours wall and telephone wires. Luckily no one was injured.”

Essop added that they have contacted all the relevant authorities so that a permanent solution could be found. He claimed that the police and the fire brigade have been there but nothing had been done.
