Namola app explained to Fairland residents

FAIRLAND – Special presentation of a very special app.


FAIRLAND – How many communities can say that they were visited and addressed by the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of a national safety app?

The Fairland Community Policing Forum can now put their hand up when asked this question as they had Peter Adolphs, the COO of Namola as a guest speaker at their general public meeting on 12 February 2019. Adolphs, along with his colleague from Namola Mark Ross, flew in from Cape Town to inform and show residents of the Fairland policing precinct on how the app works.

They shared a presentation with those in attendance on some of the facts and features of the Namola app. Namola is a crime response app that allows users to share their GPS coordinates, name and nature of the emergency with a 24/7 response call centre. Police, security companies and emergency response and citizen responders are then dispatched to the scene with the team at the response centre still monitoring the scene and keeping in contact with the victim.

Adolphs stated that the app is 100 per cent free to download and use. He also said that the purpose of the app is to enable communities to report emergencies such as active crime scenes, medical emergencies, traffic incidents and others to ensure a fast response to the victims. Namola currently has over 500 community organisations linked to it and over 3 000 responders nationally. When a person signs up on the app their details are captured, secured and encrypted and is only released in the event of an emergency. After the emergency, the person’s data is stored and encrypted again. This reduces the chance of other people getting access to user’s data and details.

Adolphs also mentioned that the Fairland CPF patrollers are registered as first responders and will react to incidents involving crime, fire, medical emergencies and traffic incidents in the area. The app also allows users to get emergency personnel if they feel uncomfortable in isolated areas or anywhere where one would feel threatened. Personnel will be dispatched to the user once Namola has evaluated the situation and area it occurred in before mobilising the appropriate emergency services.
