Police urge Uber drivers to be more careful and alert when doing their jobs

BRIXTON – Police remind Uber drivers that their safety comes first.

Police have called on Uber drivers to be extra cautious when picking up customers.

The targeting of Uber drivers and vehicles seems to be far from over, according to reports from Brixton Police Station. The station warns all Uber drivers to be extremely vigilant when receiving pickup calls in the Johannesburg central region. Spokesperson for the station, Jeanette Backoff, stated that there was a spike in these drivers being victims of crime.

“Brixton Police Station received a few reported cases of hijacked Uber vehicles after customers were picked up in the Johannesburg Central area and requested to be dropped off in Melville or Auckland Park.”

Backoff continued that there are who people pretend to be uber riders and just before they reach their destination, they pull out a firearm on the driver.

“The suspects are usually two or three males and will demand cash and cell phones. The driver will then be ordered to stop the vehicle and to get out and they speed off with the vehicle.”

Brixton police urge drivers to get more information about the customers they need to pick up and to find out how many people need to be picked up. They also advised them to not stop and pick up customers if they found them to look suspicious or anxious.
